I JUST LOVE Stockbridge market which takes place every Sunday - we start the safari at 9.30 am in a local cafe, then meander along The Water of Leith with a bit of chat and history to this village which owes its name to the Angles who came here in the 7th century - giving the stall holders time to warm up, have their first coffee of the day and have our samples ready. Many of the stall holders are the actual creators, so meet the granddaughter of the man who made Scottish tonic water and delivered it to doors like the milkman - and you think we like gin and tonic! And the man who picked the raspberries for the jam and the owner of the market garden who can tell you not just the names of the garden flowers but sell you the seeds!
All samples are pre paid so you can enjoy feasting on local jams, cheeses, chocolates, tonic water, pies and cakes without pretending you might come back later. We finish the tour at my favourite local tapas bar for a sherry - it is Sunday after all - leaving you free to return to carry on grazing.
